MoveFace Bug: Coincident surfaces cause problem

Draw two boxes, one on top of the other like this

Activate MoveFace command and select the top of the bottom cube and the bottom of the top cube (so you have 2 surfaces which overlap selected)

Try moving both those faces down from one point to a lower point like this:

This is the result I get:

This is the result I expect:

Dxf export issues

I have been exporting a lot of rhino drawings into .dxf. Most of the time no problem at all when i use R12 lines and arcs. Now somehow something is wrong. I can export and reopen it in rhino. The lines are then all white.
I cannot open it in my lasercutting software nor in librecad.
I had another one that did not show up in white line but which i could not open allso in librecad and the laser cutting software.
I will attach both files. I tried converting before exporting, different setting for R12 lines and arcs, other export schemes. Nothing seems to make a difference.

Create an enclosing shell (vacuum bag) around objects

@fven wrote:

Hi

I am trying to figure out, if there is an easy way to create an enclosing shell around multiple objects.

Case:
A large building model has been imported. which is made up of lots of objects, surfaces and so on. I would like to take all the exterior surfaces, and join them into one enclosing surface.
The best way I can explain it is, that I would like to put the model in a plastic bag, create a vacuum, and keep the plastic surface, now sticking to the objects in the bag.

Any suggestions for doing this?

Thanks

Wish: Command line to show selected object's name

$

@Rhino_Bulgaria wrote:

Currently, when selecting one or multiple objects, the command line shows text like:

“1 polysurface added to selection.”

or

“11 curve points, 1 curve, 1 surface, 2 polysurfaces added to selection”

However, there is a large unused space on the right side of this text that could be used in a clever way to show the select object’s name.

Of course, in the case of too many selected objects not all of them can be listed there (or they can, if these are arrows at either end of the object names /exactly like it’s done with the internet browsers when too many tabs are opened/, or a clickable “List” option in the command line that opens a vertical list of the selected objects that could be also copied in the system memory), but even if it’s limited to just showing several object names, that would be still much better than having nothing at all.

It is especially useful while selecting individual objects, because the user can easily see the object’s name at the command line rather than being forced to have the Properties window constantly opened, which heavily reduces the working area of the viewport.

A proposed version of this would look like this:

“11 curve points, 1 curve, 1 surface, 2 polysurfaces added to selection (“List all” “Filter”)”

Clicking on “List all” will open a separate window with vertical list of the selected objects and their names, as I mentioned above.
“Filter” will allow the user to choose whether the list will show the object names of all selected objects or only those of certain types of objects, such like polysurfaces, surfaces and extrusions, while the other object types like curves, points, meshes etc will not be listed, in order to make the list shorter and easier to read. Obviously, curve and surface points don’t have their dedicated names, so they are not shown in the list by default.

If “List all” is clicked in the above example, it will show something like:

"Selected objects:
11 curve points

Curves:
D-4-1

Surfaces:
Stairs 25G

Polysurfaces:
Pole 18
Frame x2

Click to copy all names"

Selecting a single object will result in the following text in the command line that included its name in the brackets:

“1 polysurface added to selection (Door hinge 75-3a).”

Thanks,

Bobi

How to export normal map from orthographic view?

@Konrad.Kobayashi wrote:

Hi,

I am trying to export a normal map in “tangent-space” from an orthographic view.
My first idea was to use a “matcap”/environment map for a custom material like this:

Than just save a screenshot/viewToFile.

I think it should work, but only in orthographic view, since with perspective, rays on the edge of the screen have different angles to the surface than those in the middle:

but with an orthographic view mode I get even more color shift:

how can i solve this problem? maybe a different way is easier,
1.I could render it with vray and the normals renderelement – but depending on the resolution could take a while
2.maybe theres a way with grasshopper: mesh > demesh> normals2color>construct mesh (but this would be worldspace)
3. some opengl shadermagic?

thanksfor any input !

After latest WIP 7 installation I have this message popping up each time I start WIP 7. In fact it has been happening since the previous build. I ignored it because I hardly use WIP 7 but now if I load V7 and close it and than start V6 I get updating toolbars message too. It looks like buggy V7 spills into V6 now. Interestingly enough, if I go with V6 without loading V7 first, PLEASE WAIT message won’t pop up.

So I occasionally notice, usually when switching to Rhino but sometimes not, a strange lockup where Task Manager shows zero Rhino activity, it’s not that it’s busy “working.” It sees like there is a correlation with having YouTube on, and most often when my terrible Internet connection is having trouble keeping up. Is that plausible?

@barrento wrote:

When im working in layout and the detail views are put to display modes like rendered or technical drawing the layout performance is relativ slow. Moving textblocks or annotations are very sluggish.
If i change all viewport modes to wireframe everything is smooth.
Is there an workaround to speed this up or ist this a generall Rhino problem?

Im Working with RH6 on a Win 10 Syste, with an Geforce GTX 1050 and an i-7700. So i think there is enough Performance on the hardware side.

Rhino/Maya Integration

Hello all,
I am having trouble utilizing Rhino/Fusion files (exported from rhino) and animating them in MAYA. The files will often come in fine, but the minute I animate them (rig them up) they completly fall apart. Obviously I have searched this problem, and there is alot of documentation about simply importing geometry, but making that geometry “animatable” is where the problem occurs. Any ideas would be great!
Thanks

Weird issue - one segment of my model will not export to .dwg solid correctly

$

@luke2 wrote:

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to get a bit of help here. I’ve created several large scale sculptural seats in Rhino, the specific issue I’m having is that in one of the models, just one ‘segment’ of it will not open correctly in autocad. Neither will it import correctly into Solidworks apparently - the same segment is missing.

The model appears fine in Rhino, I can’t fathom what is wrong with it. It appears to export with no issue from Rhino, but upon opening in autocad for example, that segment is missing. Note I need to export the .dwg as a ‘solid’. It appears to be fine if solids = curves in the autocad scheme export options.

I’ve attached a stripped down version below, which is the piece that won’t export, and its neighbouring two pieces which are fine (like the other 50+ segments overall, which I’ve had no problems with).

Has anybody had this before or can help point me in a direction towards solving this issue?
Created in Rhino 5, up to date service release etc.

Many thanks in advance,
Luke
