How do I move 2 objects together in a given axis and leaving no gap without manually moving them?
@guido732 wrote:
So basically I’m trying to do something like the distribute option in rhino 6 or the old addable script that lets you arrange objects with 0 gap between them.
I’m trying to find if there’s a better way to do this and controlling the direction, since distribute script works on positive axis; if arranging on X or Z you can just select the inverse viewport (front/back, left/right) so distribute works on the object you want to go first, but on Y axis this is not possible, and when you have lot’s of positioned pieces rearranging them is a nag.
My current workaround that works most of the time is creating a curve so I can just use the distribute with 0 gap but it’s not the most practical solution.
Ideally you could select the first object, then the second (or as many as one may want) and automatically have them “stick” to that first object leaving 0 gap within each other (and the rest of the selected objects).
I don’t know if this makes much sense or not, but is there a tool like that?

Default settings?
@nfoldager wrote:
Hello,
I have a few settings that I would like to be default when I start up Rhino, but I cannot find where to do it. It should be in Rhino, not just in an actual document.
Those setting are:
a. Grid off
b. O-snap on
c. Object control points shall stay off when the object is selected.Would someone be so kind as to help on that point?
Best regards,

Best ways to use create solid command?
@3dsynergy wrote:
Hi,
What is the best way to add more projections to the create solid command?
What is better to use solids or open surfaces?I am getting pretty good success in building quick parts with this tool. I never thought it was this robust it gets me many times 80 percent of the way towards what I am after.
In a 3d object we have the top the, side view I found extruding them then using the create solid command works well, but in most situations I need that 3rd projection the front view and that is when I find either my strategy or Rhino failing mainly I can only use two projections to get good output.
I’ve been adding these surfaces latter maybe some of you have suggestions on how to use the command more efficiently?
The attached file is merely the outcome of my model made using make2d after using the create solid command, but it illustrates what I am talking about. If I try to add the cylinder shapes in the front view they always result in a removal of the shape instead of the addition to it. Also some surfaces extend too far because they need that front projection to tell them when to stop but I can’t get it to work.
Great work McNeel on this command it brings me back to the old days of real drafting. I hope you make this command even more robust so we can bring in three views and get a complete model. That would be amazing and maybe even have it work with hidden lines for the hidden surfaces.

1st project - Need help with a few peculiar dimension-based questions
@sir.beret wrote:
I am a new user to Rhino. I am attempting to utilize it to create a 3D-printed casting mold for ceramics. First I am creating the piece I want to cast, then I will subtract it from a mold cylinder or rectangle, slice it in 3 (left/right/top) and print it hollow.
This is what I am trying to create: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypxer6we47I (the white plaster mold)
Now I know that Hammerly Ceramics does this process with Rhino as well, so I know it is possible: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/78672324727996552/
He just seems to 3D print the mold semi-solid: https://i.imgur.com/zVOTkX7.png
So here is what I am trying to make, like the YT video, a mold for my bowl which requires a top piece: https://i.imgur.com/RWQtmj1.png
My questions are:
- Is there an easy way to orient a top down sketch line 90 degrees right side up? I managed to somehow rotate it by dragging, but I am concerned it is not aligned properly. I imported a background sketch, traced the lines in the top perspective, then I rotated it.
- Is there a way to properly orient an object straight upward so it is not tilted?
- Is there a way to discern the width of this edge? I tried measuring the linear dimension to no avail https://i.imgur.com/9EPJTGx.png
- Dimmension is really important since I have to make sure this is exact. I need to make the top outter edge exactly 8.62 cm, is there a command I can input that will proportionally scale the whole object to that diameter? Keep in mind, this isn’t the outter most edge, but the top-most edge which tapers inward a little.
- Is there a way to adjust the thickness of the outter wall at the top (where the yellow lines are in a the previous photo) to a smaller size, or perhaps am I able to soften the slope?
- Is there a way to do something, like add a triangular bump and have it copied radially at this point?
- Is there a way to add or subtract something from the edges and snap at an equal distance to each quarter?
- Is there a way to add a guideline near the top so I know where to cut off the mold at for the top piece? Like radially around the upper outer wall?
I realize a lot of these questions might be answered in basic tutorials but I haven’t found the answers to the specifics I am looking for. Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you.

Align helix to two or 4 curves
@Jailie wrote:
Hey there,
I’m currently working on a sword handle. So on sowrds you have those leatherstrips, that are wrapped along the handle ( like this: http://www.kultofathena.com/images/ANH16_3_l.jpg )
I thought I could do this with a helix, but the helix just goes vertical up, but I need the form of the handle in it.
I also tried turning the points of the helix on and align it to the curve, but that looks just odd.
Could anyone possibly help me to get this right?
I hope I expressed the problem understandable. I couldn’t find a similar topic in the internet, so I finally ask here for help.
Thanks,
Jailie

Clipping Plane Fills! Please
@djhg wrote:
They’re still unreliable, and I don’t understand how this can remain the situation for so long.
Almost no design can be communicated without a cross section. Basic convention has always been that if a section goes through an object, the interior of the object is hatched, usually in a solid tone in a design drawing, just as often with diagonal lines in a construction drawing.
It is NOT common practice for a sanctioned object NOT to have a hatch. When it’s left off it almost always leads to confusion.
And yet in Rhino this has never been reliable. Every few months I assume that it will surely work, but it never does. Each time I assume that it’s because of the particular configuration I’m attempting (at the moment with objects imported from Sketchup) but it always boils down to the fact that it frequently simply doesn’t work on any object. It takes a long time to verify this each time, with all the different settings and display possibilities contributing. In a working context, being unable to provide this very basic technique comes is unprofessional.
This despite repeated posts on the subject (this is only the recent ones):
I can’t emphasize how basic an issue this is. A professional tool requires it.
The only reliable work-around is section tools, but that complicates layer structure and requires clipping planes as well to get clipped views. It’s very inefficient.Can I ask why this seems to be a low development priority? PLEASE provide a solution that works!
