Pointclouds in Rhino 6

$

Having used Rhino years ago as a frontend for a Faro Template Arm and modeling from the digitized curves, then mesh conversion into AutoCAD and 3DSMax, I just upgraded to Rhino6. I’m now immersed in the world of pointclouds. In deciding this upgrade, I read some things on the Rhino website that were both exciting and horribly outdated (and probably should be removed). I’d like some knowledgeable peers to give me the skinny on the current state of affairs with PC’s in R6. Thank you for any replies in advance.

If you go to the Rhino website and search pointclouds, the top item touts a capability that does not exist anymore (maintain your website and keep it relevant!). It talks about Point Clouds for Rhino (V3 & V4 only). Wrapping and draping meshes onto pointclouds. The thing mentioned that I would like to do the most is placing a mesh under a terrain scan, then drape a planar mesh up from the bottom. That would generate a topographic profile mesh using the lowest points in a scan (where the laser reached the surface through foliage). I know that company was bought ages ago by Autodesk as they had a 3DSMax plugin as well, and that they killed that company. You know, as the big fish do to the little fish, shafting us minnows.

I had another reason to get Rhino, to open a Rhino filed supplied by a client that had a scan already in it. While upgrading and serving that need, I was hoping the mesh draping was now part of the Rhino core. Autodesk has done nothing with pointclouds in Max and AutoCAD since it’s first introduction years ago. I was hoping McNeel was more active in this area.

In general, what is the process for getting scans in Rhino? The file I was given was interior and exterior scans as two separate blocks. I needed to get it into AutoCAD for my client. First I figured out I needed to explode the blocks. Curiously, that made the R6 file twice as large. I would think the sheer number of points in the scans dictated the file size. Why does making the scans blocks make the file smaller? Pointclouds in Autodesk are XREFs. Pointclouds in Rhino seem to be embedded in the file. After exploding, I could export, import into ReCap, then get them into Autodesk products.

So what can I do with pointclouds in Rhino? Any cool features? How about via plugins, scripts? What’s with the block thing? Any awesome editing tools? Snappy renders? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again.

Display Bug: Nested blocks transparency textures

$

Hello,

We have been having this problem for a while but now I finally took time to document, prepare sample files and do some more testing. This is a bit obscure but annoying display issue with nested blocks that use transparency map and custom per-object display mode.

Setup: Main display mode is Rendered (modified to show edges of surfaces and meshes), it could also be shaded or any regular non-wireframe mode.
The mode assigned to objects with transparency map per-object is a copy of Rendered, but with no edges (common for entourage display with Alpha map like trees, people etc.).

All works fine for regular objects or non-nested block objects. As soon as the blocks become nested, the transparency display goes out of whack. The condition for this problem to occur is that the original blocks or the non-block geometry has to be not visible, otherwise it works fine.
Note how the “evergreen” block made of 2 simple planes with transparency pretty much disappears if nested, because if this problem.

Here is a sample of how it looks:

Here is a test file shown in the video (textures saved in the file)
nestedblocktransparency_sample.3dm (2.6 MB)

Display modes used and SysInfo file:
Rendered.ini (12.5 KB) RenderNOEDGES.ini (11.4 KB) SysInfo.txt (2.7 KB)

@jeff - tagging you here as the main Display dev but it may as well be someone else that needs to look at it. Oh, I and tested both in latest V6 and WIP - same problem shows.

thanks,

–jarek

How to replicate this Sketch Up workflow creating the "Twist museum"?

$

There is a great SketchUp artist on Instagram who posts speed workflows. This one for the Twist museum is really amazing…

…and I’m trying to replicate it in Rhino, but I hit a wall instantly.

I threw a cube down, sliced up a middle portion of it, and applied a twist transform to it, resulting in…

Untitled.3dm (3.1 MB)

Clearly this is way, way off, especially because I’m realizing this really needs to be made of hundreds of individual cube elements, all of which are “twisted”.

What’s the ideal way to replicate this Sketch Up process using Rhino tools?

Hi all,
Has anyone experienced rendering bug around the origin point? I have a surface with a single material assign but it shows different level of shading around the origin point almost like it has been split (which it is not). Just want to know if this is a known issue and how to overcome it. Screenshots below

Disable all toobars for all intances for ever

This command must be run at every launch
! _-Toolbar _Collection _CloseAll

And results in:

r

How do you enter a return keystoke in the macro?

Or better yet, how do you just permanently disable toolbars?

If it were possible to keep one toolbar on the LHS without the strip beneath the command line, I ould be happy with that.

And is there a macro way to toggle the RHS Layers, options etc panel to hide/unhide?

Hi !

Yesterday I have work on my file without problems.
And this morning when I want to open the same file on rhino, that was not possible …

I’m on Windows 10 and I use Rhino 6.

My problem :

When Rhino starts all is well. But when the 4 views load, the soft freeze, and no more action is possible. I’m obliged to close Rhino because Windows say me : “Rhino not reponding”

P.S : Excuse me for my approximative english ^^

Thanks,

Hideswap and layer visibility

$

0

Objects on layers that are off become visible in either of the hideswap states. This seems like wrong behavior to me. In my little world, I’d like to be able to hideswap, turn on a layer and NOT see the objects that were previously not visible, since they were never ‘hidden’ with the hide command in the first place. They were not visible due to being on a layer that was ‘off’.

The current behavior makes it difficult to segregate and differentiate and find things sometimes.

I’ve always assumed that hiding an object adds a ‘hidden’ attribute of some sort, and puts it in the ‘hidden’ world, and will never be visible again until ‘unhidden’. This is what makes sense to me.

Fun little twist you can try at home that is a real pisser with complex projects:
-turn off a layer with an object on it that is ‘visible’ (ie: not hidden with the hide command)
-run hideswap
-turn on the layer in step 1 above. That object is now visible.
-hideswap again and now that object has been hidden, even though the layer is ‘on’.

Am I out to lunch with this thinking?
This has been on my backburner for a while, but just now getting a chance to address it here.

I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy lately!

Hello,

I’m trying to update my Rhino from 6.21 to the latest version as I need 6.23 or higher for Vray.
When I go to Help > Check for Updates it give the following message and all options are grey: The McNeel Update Service is unavailable.

Is this me? Is there another way to update?

How to join lines with distant ends?

Hello.

I tried to join polylines and it looked fine, but Grasshopper did not detect any shape. I zoomed in and it turned out that there were massive gaps between those ends and no function I used so far worked. Filleting removed the lines instead of joining them. Add to that, points that should be at the ends of lines are next to them. What can I do?

Rhino Window Disappears - Can't switch to different rhino process via ALT+TAB

$

This is affecting me on my work computer and on my home PC.

I can’t ALT+TAB to switch windows, nor can I retrieve the window from the title bar, workaround I have found is to ALT+TAB and then click on the window close button, which will pop-up the save file dialog, which also pops-up the window. Other times can keep ALT+TABbing and eventually it switches to that process.

This is not good If I have just opened a big file.

Am running RH6.

Only happens when Rhino is open.

Seems to only happen when multiple Rhinos are open.

Can also affect other windows, last night I could not get to a revit process.

Does not happen when rhino is not running.

Is not related to any models.

Is not always replicable.

I am also getting the error often:

“2020.05.08 10:37:09.792 +09:30 [1] | WARN | Could not claim hotkeys. Another CAD process is unresponsive.”

Thanks, if anyone is experiencing the same issue, please tell.

So the thing is I am trying to switched my old professional graphic card to the new gaming graphic card.

Right now I am using the Quadro P2000 5gb card, but I am thinking about switch the card to GTX 1660 Super or RTX 2060.

I am just wondering is both of the cards are better than P2000?

Why is moving and undoing so slow when reading in the file is fast?

$

Hi guys, this is driving me crazy…
(@wim, @pascal)

We often need to import large maps as PDF’s and that results in thousands of curves and small triangular hatches. Which is OK given that we can’t get another file format.

BUT we often have to move them and scale them and sometimes I do something wrong and need to undo… and then all hell breaks loose. And I don’t understand it, why is reading in the PDF so super fast, but moving that same data (rewriting within Rhino) is soooo slow??? It makes no sense to me and obviously is frustrating.

Reading in the file takes 5 seconds. Scaling that same content takes 1 minute and 50 seconds!

KMZ import -> Rhino

$

I’ve got a KMZ file and no access to any other source data, and need some way of importing the data to Rhino, preferably to nurbs. I know this is a google earth file type, and could be read in Sketchup, but even in that workaround, saving it again to SKP imports it as a mesh to Rhino - are there any other ways to perhaps convert it to a SHP file or import it otherwise? Thanks

Develop a shape with texture

hello, in order to be able to realize this object I would like to develop this shape while keeping the texture as it is. I applied a rectangular texture with a cylindrical mapping and now I would like to get this texture once changed by the mapping. I manage to develop the shape by transforming it into mesh then in Nurbs but I lose the texture. Is it possible to develop a texture on Rhino?

Thanks a lot.

Exporting to illustrator

$

Hi,

I have done a few orthographic drawings at 1:1 scale in rhino, with the document set to large objects (millimetres) and I am now ready to export them into illustrator to scale it at 1:50. I have put each drawing on its own document, selected it and moved each one to the coordinates 0,0. Once I open it in illustrator it is way off the art board, I have even tried moving each drawing to the origin point to no avail. Please help!

Thank you
