Rhino 6 Wrong Dimension Precision

$

PLEASE HELP!!

I am making a file to laser cut and it is very important that I have at least 1.000 precision. I have tried to fix it several times in different files, but it doesn’t seem to work.

I have tried Units, Grid, and googled the topic 10,934,923,048 times.

even when the settings say 1.0000 like the image, the dimensions only display 1.00 precision

I highlighted what the rectangle dimensions should show, but on the grid they are not.

In my AutoCad there is a check box for prints to PDF to automatically open in a PDF Reader. “Show results in a viewer”.

Any such feature in Rhino?

Overwrite Named View

Is it not possible to overwrite named view? Giving a warning is a good thing, but it really needs an option to overwrite if I’m sure I want to update the view. Layer State can be updated/overwritten. Why not Named View? Hoping I just missed an option somewhere.

Mesh vs surface - control points & edges

$

i’m creating faceted surface but also need to chamfer edges, if i use mesh i cant chamfer and if i use surfaces the edges don’t remain straight… tbh i’m still not sure on the best use of mesh vs surface

Below is an example of typical comparison, moving point highlighted in green
mesh keeps EDGE A straight
surface starts to bend EDGE A (and all the edges associated )

Can edge on a surface be fixed to change as a facet?

Files for 3D tube bending software

pipe trial.3dm (10.2 MB)

Hello, I am trying to save these tube profiles out of rhino and use in a 3D pipe bender however the pipe bending software isn’t recognizing the surfaces of the tubes to create its bend data. I am new to rhino, so I am wondering if I am building the profiles wrong in rhino or if there is a better option to export the file out as for other software. Currently I am having to redraw everything in solidworks and then save it out as a .stp file for the bending software.

anyone have experience with this situation?

thanks.

Sweep1 around cylinder

I have a curve around a cylinder that I would like to use as the centerline of a channel for an engraving cut on a 4 axis cnc. The path I have drawn follows the curve of the cylinder. I would like to show a 3mm wide by 4.5mm deep channel in my model. I have tried to use a sweep1 curve (with plans to do a boolean difference) with a 3x4.5 box, but because of the rotation around the A axis, parts of the back doubles over itself in places. I have tried adding extra “boxes” along the path to try and keep its shape but no luck. Is there a better method than sweep1?

How to create TextObject with commandscript?

$

Hi,

I’m trying to figure out how to create TextObject with a command script file. (Tools->Commands->Read From File).

I cannot figure that out by documentation - if I type TextObject to the command line and press space, I get a GUI dialog. How do you select font, size and single stroke via the text command file?

The target is mass volume laser cutting files, and manual GUI clicking is not a real option.
I also need to put the text on different layer automatically, so it will be engraved instead cutting.

Creating geometry works perfectly though, only this text is an issue.

Also its not feasible to change to another scripting method, the source of the data is old FORTRAN code, and we’ll not fix something that is not broken… So if the TextObject cannot work we’ll probably use Hershey fonts instead.

TwinMotion - Should I use Unlink at some point?

$

Hi all,

I tried posting this a few days ago, but I somehow I don’t think it actually posted - so apologies if this is a dup…

Ok, so scenario:

I have most of my geo in my sync’d TM file *I’ve gone through and changed my materials in TM and it looks great.

Now, I realize I had a Rhino layer off when I sync’d it up, and I’d like to update the TM file with that layer that’s now turned on in Rhino. BUT I don’t want the rest of the materials, etc, to get messed up in TM (which they do, if I just click the little Sync “eye” icon in the TM toolbar)

Should I be using “Unlink” on the objects in the TM that I don’t want changed? And if so, what’s the correct process? I can’t seem to get it right. I just keep messing up my TM file.

BONUS Q: What if I want to add extra geo from within the original synched Rhino model? (Not talking about Importing a separate FBX)

Alt: Is it possible to turn off “Update Materials” when syncing, so only geo changes in Rhino are updated on TM side?

Thx

NetworkSrf v. Sweep2

$

Maybe someone can explain this general problem that I have with Sweep2 when using table of offset data. That is, accordion pleats. I have read many posts and seen several Youtube video decrying the use of NetworkSrf.

Here I have table of offset data:

The curve at the top and bottom of the point set have been faired to get rid of rounding errors and then I regenerated the Y coordinates by intersecting. Then I have drawn the vertical curves through the new points in the original points. I have spaced the vertical curves every four frames, except the end where I did 3 frames.

Here I have done networkSrf:

The highlighted curves are intersections I did at the waterlines matching the points. Note that these curves run close to the original points that I did not include in the curve set.

Here have used the same curves with Sweep2.

Now the intersections waterlines are wavy.

This is not always the case. Here have three surfaces joined. The forward surface is a tangency zone, so I used edgesrf. The surface above the knuckle is a sweep2. It’s sections are mostly lines.

I’m, still trying to figure out what I am going to do for the dreaded corner (which in this case is actually 4-sided). Sweep2 gives the accordion pleats there.

  1. What causes sweep2 to create accordion pleats?
  2. Does this illustrate use the right too for the right job?

Fillets are not accurate and (at least visually) leave gaps

$

I’m doing the Rhino 6 level 2 training materials and came across this. Not an error yet, but might be soon. At least visually there is a gap when zooming in that is noticeable. This seems to be due to Rhino 6’s filleted surfaces not being accurate enough and even the DupEdge command does not recognize this inaccuracy. Does it matter; will it give me errors later on possibly? And why can’t I select the surface edges instead of doing DupEdge for this part of the Level 2 Training Materials for Rhino 6? If someone does do what they train you to do and create any fillets and/or chamfers with the ‘trim=no’ option selected during the tool’s/command’s use, then I can see issues arising because of this. On the left is a grey surface created from the NetworkSrf command and on the right in the picture is the filleted surface (trim=no as they tell you to do during fillet creation).

Rhino crash and cannot open the file

$

Hi,

I have this problem a couple of times, but this one becomes annoying since I do not have any backup file.

So, when I try to save my file, it suddenly crashes and my computer shut down.
After I turn on the computer and open the Rhino file, it says:

and until now I could not open the file.
Does anyone have a similar problem?

Please let me know if there is any solution.

Best,
Zaqi
